Ok here goes
The old (ballast needed) coil had THREE wires to the + terminal (Not sure
of the colors, the car is there, I am here). The car has a Pertronix. One
wire went to the 4th terminal on the solenoid. I have a 4 wire ignition
switch - have had for several years, The old one was a 5 wire switch. I
still do not know what the other wire was for. (the switch came from the
fact that the only key I had for the Midget was in my pocket on the beach
near Atlantic City, I went swimming - 'nuff said). The new coil (no
ballast needed, only one I could get on short notice) still had THREE
wires to the + terminal. The "NEW" solenoid only has 3 Terminals. The
missing one is the one that had the post for the WLG wire to the + side
of the coil. This wire is HOT when the car is running. I am unsure of the
status of this wire when the starter is engaged.
So right now I have:
1) A four wire ignition switch (2+ yrs old - always worked)
2) a NON Ballasted coil (one week old)
3) a THREE terminal solenoid (used - put on last night)
The car ran fine, and stated - usually, in steps 1 (4 wire switch,
ballasted coil, 4 terminal solenoid), 2 (the 4 wire switch, non ballasted
coil, 4 terminal solenoid), 3) (4 wire switch, non-ballast coil, 3 post
solenoid).
The only reason this all came up is the solenoid is not working. All of
the other items seemed to be working just dandy. The solenoid would catch
and start the car about 7 times out of 10. That is OK for me but my 16
y/o daughter still tries to kill the engine upon occasion when pulling
out from a stop. So I needed the solenoid.
