Mike,
I agree that there are poorly-conducted and poorly-presented studies.
Additionally, there is a symbiosis between the medical research
community and the press that I do not like. As a basic researcher and
the editor-in-chief of a molecular biology journal, I have seen the
good, the bad, and the ugly. And occasionally, the outstanding.
However, in my admittedly limited experience, the percentage of truly
bad science is very small.
As for the "lazy and pathetic" comment, were you one of the reviewers
on my last grant submission? :)
