Daniel, you hit it on the head! Although to me most cars sold today are
soulless. Can't quite put my finger on what it is about them. I do agree
with Frank about them all looking the same and fading into the crowd. Some
people like that - my wife doesn't like being conspicuous for example - she
owned a '91 gray Chevy Cavalier when we got married. Decent, reliable
transportation. Boring as all get out, though. I think the greater
computerization, while it may add to reliability, economy, etc. also takes
away something. Too many black boxes makes it hard to really get to know the
car.

I did own a '90 Plymouth Laser - bought it when it first came out. A joint
production of Chrysler and Mitsubishi. I did enjoy that car, and I do miss
it still. It was a lot of fun, and at the time was fairly unique looking.
Still, I wouldn't have dreamed of tinkering with the engine (which was right
out of a Mitsubishi Gallant) and so it always seemed kind of "distant" if
you know what I mean. My first car on the other hand was a 1970 Chevy Monte
Carlo. Big American muscle - it has the distinction of having the longest
hood Chevy ever put on a car! I brought that car "back from the dead" after
my grandfather told me if I could fix it, I could have it. I REALLY wish I
still had that car. Practically gave it away, and they were worth a lot more
when I sold it, and even more now. But that car had soul. My MG has soul. My
Dodge minivan has no soul. My Dodge Dakota pickup has some soul, but I've
had it over 10 years now and it took a while to find it.
