I agree that you are probably right on this, however it is by no means as
innocuous as it may seem. These people contribute to an overwhelming welfare
cost, which is our government's misdeeds as much as the illegal's, but also
involves any child born of illegal parents in the US. That child is a
citizen, and has all the rights of one--which basically insures that Mama
will be able to receive welfare for herself, her husband, and her other
offspring, as well as the little new American Citizen. This does create a
hardship on the welfare system, particularly in California. Luckily, unlike
the "manana" stereotype, illegal Mexican immigrants are religious, family
oriented, and hard working. Many of these ragged wretches who show up
homeless from Mexico become independent citizens in a few years by their own
industry, although some will never pay income taxes, or own a home, or learn
to speak English (but their children will), or perhaps even be able to quit
looking over their shoulder for someone to send them back to Mexico. It's
the way things are, and it's too bad.
The more important problem is the 1%. Who are they? The chances are pretty
good that they aren't Mexicans, and therein lies the need for vigilance at
the borders, since Mexico does not defend its shores well. Military people
can be trained for public service, in fact many of them are. We need to
utilize whatever resources we have to keep troublemakers out of our country.
I personally would rather have 99 real Mexican immigrants to one middle
easterner with a cause, but that's my take. Incidentally, there is a certain
level of checking at the border between Canada and the U. S, even with
passports. I don't go to Mexico, so I can't vouch for the difficulty of
crossing there.
