I installed a LCB on my car.   It wouldn't clear the steering column either, but
I was able to make it fit by:

1. Disconnecting the steering in the cockpit and the rack and pulling the whole
thing aft as far as it would go.
2. Loosening the motor mounts and jacking the engine.
3. Cutting the hole by the frame rail about 1/4" inch to the outboard.

Then it slipped right in. Hope this helps.
