I have used kerosene, which does a good job and is not really volatile.  But 
you have to be sure you dry your parts off and coat them with a coating of 
DW40 or similar because parts will rust after being exposed to kerosine. Last 
time I used one I used Diesel fuel, which has an oily (but clean) residue which 
prevents the rust problem.  If I am cleaning parts which I want squeaky clean, 
then Paint thinner is good stuff.  Protective gloves throughout.
