You will probably need to re-wire the plug on the end of the cord for the 
inverter to reverse the leads. Aty that point, as you implied, the invertor 
is getting exactly the voltage it expects. You might want to make sure that 
it sits on the seat and not up against any chassis ground, put it would be 
no different than the "isolation boxes" used to install decent stereos into 
positive ground vehicles.
BTW, Radio Shack has a replacement plug 270-1509 that works very well.
