I thought of that the other day when the power was off for a few hours. I
think that it can be done with a bit of muscle, but, my family car doesn't
fit in the garage, so we can use that. When a spring broke, when we first
bought this old house, the repair guy showed up and told me that I couldn't
lift that big door by myself and then later on, he did. He is substantially
smaller than I am, but I'm not going to try it unless I have to. :)

Powered garage doors? - there's a novel idea!
How do you get the car out when there is a power cut?

Thanks for the thought, but the garage is completely my domain. No-one else
goes there.

Also, it's not like the door fell down. It powered down. I opened it; had
time to go in, crabwalk to the back of the car; push it halfway out; go
back; grab the stepladder; and then I heard the sound of the door starting
to close ... If I had been smarter, I would have pulled the plug instead of
the ( what I think is ) the emergency stop cord, but it happened so fast ...

You might want to rig something safer until you replace the door.
Don't want any kids getting caught in there. ...bill

The door is fine. It is an old heavy wood double door. The opener seems to
be malfunctioning or getting stray signals that are interfering with it. It
is an old Stanley chain drive.

What is the electric eye system? The car was halfway out, so an "eye"
slightly above floor level wouldn't have done any good. ( I just answered my
own question, didn't I? Mount it higher. ))

I'll check that out.
Thnaks!
