Mine works that way too, but there was no way to get to it quickly enough.

I'm a bit short and have to almost jump to reach those release cords but
even my old Craftsman door opener (without an electronic eye) will still
reverse if it hits something hard enough.  For that reason on the rare
occasion my door would start to close undesirably I'd run to the door and
pull/push up on it to make it reverse direction.
