Dave,

The information Dave Johnson has given you regarding the dipstick and oil
level is correct so long as; a) the dipstick tube matches the dipstick,
matches the engine, and b) you are using the 5 quart oil pan and have no
other modifications such as oil cooler, extra filters, etc.

Regarding the "metal plates", they are indeed for heat shielding. They were
found necessary by Rootes to prevent premature failure of the motor mount
rubber and should, therefore, be installed. I believe that Cullen Bennett
posted a template for these heat shield some time back. Perhaps you could
ask him directly to re-send it to you. It's just simple sheet metal.
