Well, here is one you will find hard to believe but here goes. I made an
emergency cable for my Cobra out of a 66 Mustang cable. I had the same
problem that you had in that the aluminum swaged ends wouldn't hold. I ended
up putting a ball of weld with my torch on the end of the cable and letting
it cool slowly so that it was annealed. I water cooled the first one I did
and it shattered like a piece of glass. I know that annealed wire isn't as
strong as the original work hardened wire but the cable has been working for
about two years with out breaking.
