Mayf,

I think we can all agree that for a rapidly rotating U-joint assembly, the
joints should be aligned "in phase" to avoid vibration due to the variation
in rotation velocity with angle that occurs when they are not aligned. The
steering column assembly is not a "rapidly rotating" assembly. It is also
engineered by Rootes to be significantly out of phase. The only logical
conclusion I can come to is the misalignment was done purposely to avoid
"hard spots" at certain rotation angles. Of course, it's also possible that
Rootes simply didn't know what the *%$# they were doing. ;-)
