The fitting you have turned up is an insert fitting, but is not the one that 
you want.  It's an adapter...to change from threaded pipe to plastic pipe.  
There are all types of insert fittings.  What you want is a reducing insert 
coupling or reducer union.  This will be barbed on both ends.

Okay, just went through two catalogues.  An RV supply house, "Coast" has what 
you want in both plastic and nylon.  A second source, a mobile home supply 
house, "Kaufman", has what you want in plastic, nylon and brass.  The brass one 
sold for $1.27 in the yr. 2000.
