The e brake handle requires only 4 to 5 clicks to be locked up solid. That
is correct according to shop manual.

Again, the first time this problem occured was after sitting overnight.
I got in the car and put my foot on the brake. The pedal went right to the
floor. I released the pedal and pumped it several times in rapid succession.
It firmed up some on the second pump and was solid on the third.  I paused a
moment and stepped on the pedal and it went to the floor.  I got out of the
car and popped the hood. The master cylinder reservoir was still full of
fluid.  After driving the car carefully to the parts store for fluid, and a
wrench, I bled the front calipers.  We bled one pedal strokes worth out of
the passenger caliper and the brake pedal was high and firm.  For
completeness sake we bled the drivers caliper and there was no change in the
pedal level or feel.  I drove the car for 3 more days with a high and firm
pedal. Then in a 15 minute stop in a parking the pedal went soft again.  I
repeated the process of bleeding the front calipers.  Again I bled the
passenger caliper first. This time the pedal did not firm up until the
drivers caliper was bled.  I bled two strokes of the pedal this time on each
caliper this time.  As I write this, the car has 5 days and over 500 miles
since the last bleeding and the pedal is still firm.

I have no clue what might be going wrong, but I intend to go through the
brake system thoroughly.
