These IR guns are very accurate and have many uses. The Grainger $100 gun
works every bit as good as our $1,100 Omega IR gun and in fact is much easier
to handle.
The two big surprises I found on my car were that the bottom two tubes of some
radiators are plugged and according to the radiator shop this is normally done
for strength and reliability issues. Without the gun, and checking it, I would
never have even inquired.
2nd surprise, my headers were running 350 (+/-20), 350, 550, 350, 350, 350,
350, 350... #3 cylinder was HOT. I later found the vacuum servo was bleeding
air into the carb base and it dumped right into #3 runner. Without an IR gun,
you wouldn't know. Also it can find a dead cylinder (you can do that with your
hand but its somewhat painful and doesn't impress folks).
An IR gun has lots of uses besides checking the temperature of a beer can
across the garage :)
