John, When I rebuilt the brake system I removed every last vestige of Dot 3. 
This goes a long way for extended life. I also placed some extra seals in a 
jar of Dot 5. I still have it and they are untouched..no swelling, softness. 
Maybe the Egyptians used it on their dead..   Gary
