Hi, folks.

It was a beautiful day here in Toronto, today. Not too hot, not too
cool -- just right for an early summer cruise. So I thought I would
take the Tiger out for an afternoon drive, and was really enjoying
myself, right up to the moment that a carload of drunk teens almost
killed me by pulling out into oncoming traffic (me) to try to pass a
long line of traffic. With nowhere to go, my choice was either a
head-on, or hard on the brakes and then off into the soft gravel
shoulder at about 40 mph. The fact that I am typing this tells you how
I chose. I managed to get her stopped, with some drama, and,
thankfully, no apparent damage. I even had a microsecond to notice that
the kids were laughing as the went by less than six inches to my left,
and one looked to be threatening to throw a beer bottle at me. Although
I feel like I want to kill them, I really hope they made it home alive,
if you know what I mean.

All seemed fine, so I pulled back onto the road to continue on my
journey, only to hear a strange sound under load. At first, I thought
it was still my heart trying to escape my chest, but it quickly became
evident that it was coming from the engine, which had been performing
flawlessly until that point. I'm hoping that you folks might be able to
assist me in determining what could be wrong. Here are the symptoms:

Under load, I hear a loud clattering noise that sounds like
exceptionally loud pinging or a bad exhaust leak. In neutral, I can
only replicate this for brief moments by hitting the throttle hard, but
on the road it happens when I am accelerating even a little bit. There
is no constant noise at idle, and I could detect no issues with the
exhaust anywhere. The engine runs smoothly when not under load, and all
gauges read normally.

After looking for an obvious cause for awhile, I finally pulled off the
air cleaner, and was able to consistently re-create the problem by
blipping the throttle hard. What seems to be happening is that the car
is spitting back through the carb under load, which it has never done
before. Does this maybe sound like a timing issue or something similar?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Shaun
