Correct; there is no real visual differences between the assemblies other
than the casting numbers and date codes on each stock Ford part.

There are 2 freeze plug blocks and 3 freeze plug blocks; 5 bolt and 6 bolt
engines. None of these visual clues will definitively tell you what size
engine you have.

The easiest way to tell what block you have is to read the casting number at
the starter location and it is the only way to know what block you have
visually.

You can look at any of the Ford parts and read the part numbers and only
assume they are the original build parts for that engine.

There is an engine build date code on the block in front of the left head;
all the original parts for that engine must have casting date codes that
precede the engine build date code. Any date codes that are after the
engine build date code are replacement parts.

One of the best information sources for casting numbers and date codes is
Mustang and Ford Small Block V8 by Bob Mannel.
This book documents parts, part numbers, casting numbers and date codes by
year for 1962 - 1969 engines.

Another good source is High Performance Ford Engine Parts Interchange by
George Reid. This book contains similar information for 221 cid to 460 cid
engines.

So there is no way to tell these apart unless you pull the starter or
intake
or the heads? I didn't want to tear down the engine I just wanted to know
if
there was an easy way to tell the engines apart by a glance at the engine.
