Another thing to consider is wheelbase, the shorter the wheelbase the worse
it is for towing.
Also when towing be sure NOT have the weight too far back in the trailer,
the trailer will start dictating where the truck goes, very scary. (Don't
ask me how I know that).

Thanks for all the response. I see my question was
incomplete due to my own lack of experience with the issue.

The trailer I have in mind would be an open flatbed, not a heavier enclosed.

My ideas at least now, wouldn't involve passes over 5000' My budget can't
handle Diesal F250. Sounds like I should also put 6 cyl Ranger types
out of my mind and focus on at least a full size w/ V8
