It's not necessary or even advisable to put the clamps on the 
spring while it's on the car.  In fact, you may not be able
to remove the spring/shock assembly in this state.

With the wheels off the ground, you can remove the spring/
shock assembly as a unit.  The shocks are holding back the
spring, and it can be removed this way.

Use your compressors on the spring after the assembly is out.
It's an easy job.  One non-obvious reassembly tip:  when you
install the assembly to the top plate, the bottom mount will
probably not be in line to take the bolt.  Install it in
such a way that when the top is attached you can insert a very
big screwdriver to rotate the bottom shock mount CLOCKWISE.
The friction of a compressed spring makes rotation of the bottom
plate easy in the direction of the spiral, virtually impossible
in the opposite direction.
