Greg-
You ask about misfire and rough running...

Probably the toughest problem to track down !
Well, you know what they say, "Opinions are like..." well you know what they
say.
Here's my Opinion:
First look at carburation
1-Take off air cleaners, lift piston. Does it go up slowly and with some
resistance ? Yes = OK, No = put oil in carbs. Let go of piston at top of
travel,. Does the piston hit the body of the carb with a metallic click ? Yes
= Ok, No = centralise jet head. Go to 2
2- Pull pistons off of carbs. Look down thru top at level of gas inside the
jet. Approx 3/16" below top of jet ? Yes = Ok. No = adjust float levels. Go
to 3
3- Look thru throat of carbs and advance throttle linkage. Do both
butterflies open at the same rate and distance ? Yes = Ok, No = check that
butterflies are firmly attached and that linkage is solid (especially that
little wavvy connector piece in the middle as it sometimes breaks and is hard
to tell, also the throttle shafts will often bind up if worn in the carb
body)

If all that doesn't do anything but consume a Saturday afternoon, check the
small black cloth covered wire that connects the points to the white plastic
connector inside the distributor. This little sucker will develop a break
that doesn't show up until the advance mechanism starts to work, which then
pulls the wire apart. You can use any wire as a test piece, but you will have
to go to an original wire for normal driving as the wire is constantly
bending and must be very flexible.

If none of the above works...Call the witch doctor and have the curse removed
!

Rarely running on all cylinders myself
