Actually, to be painfully correct, standard equipment on Spitfires 
through 1973, at least in the U.S. was 5.20 x 13 bias ply tire. The 145 x 
13 radial was an option. In 1974, they standardized a 155 x 13 radial. 
FWIW, the supplier was usually Dunlop, although Goodyear was an alternative.

Anyway, a 175/70 x 13 radial will fit very comfortably on the wheel, even 
if it's the 4.5" wheel. With a 1979, you might have the later 5" wheel, 
in which case the 185/70 would also fit reasonably well. Either way, the 
bit of extra width over the original 155 (80 series) tire is worth it for 
overall driving pleasure, etc.
