It's been my experience when welding any thermally stressed part that has
cracked from such stress, it will just end up cracking again, at exactly
the same spot.  Even when done properly, heating the item, using the proper
welding rod, etc.

The engines (except for intake and exhaust manifolds and possibly water
inlets and outlets) are Identical.

You'll have to be a little more specific here.  Are these both Spitfire
trannys or MG/Spitfire.  Are they the same relative type (single rail
Marina, or three rail).  If all the same type then yes the parts will
interchange, and you can exchange the overdrive, but its a little more
complicated as the mainshaft and adapter have to be swaped.
