>From your description it sounds like your friend has a TR4A, which uses a
very different top from the TR4.
The TR4 top frame does not clamp to the windshield top. It ends well
behind the windshield. The back edge of the top cloth snaps to the trim
strip behind the cockpit. The front edge has a backward-facing lip that
tucks under the trim strip on top of ther windshield. The lip has metal
stiffening strips inside it. There is one snap at each side of the
windshield.
When not in use the top cloth is removed and stowed in the trunk. The top
frame folds down and is covered by the upholstery in the rear of the
cockpit.
You'll get a better idea of how it fits together by examining another TR4
(not a TR4A), or by getting a reprint of the owner's handbook from one of
the Triumph mail order specialists (TRF, Moss, etc).
