Brian:

If the cable is breaking this means something
is seiznig whilke the cable is still trying to 
spin, thus causing it to snap. This can only mean
that the neck or gears in the tach have siezed thus
causing the cable to snap. Order a new cable from
Moss, install into distributor but not the tach
and run engine to be sure cable spins freely.

I had same problem with my speedometer.
