I think this is fairly normal for shifting under power with an O/D in good 
shape.  Keep in mind that the O/D works After the transmission, so in 2nd 
gear the engine appears to have both more inertia and torque than in 3rd or 
4th.  I personally always declutch to shift into 2nd O/D, both to avoid the 
jerk, and to spare the (AFAIK) irreplaceable clutch linings.

I certainly wouldn't try to soften the shift by adjusting the lever arm. 
 The only way it would work is if you either slow down the movement, which 
will likely burn up the solenoid, or make the valve leak when the lever is 
in the engaged position, which will eventually make the O/D slip.

The shift will probably smooth out somewhat when the weather warms up, or 
you could try lighter (or heavier) oil.

P.S. While we're on the topic, anybody got a source for A-type O/D clutch 
linings ?
