OK, so my memory failed me yet again (damn that alcohol). I suspect
that there was a bit more wrong with the old alternator than I
mentioned in my previous post - dad seems to think that one of
the diodes in the AC->DC rectifier circuits was stuffed, which
meant that I was only getting 2/3 charging current. Even without
that problem, I still think 28 amps is a bit whimpy too.

I did ring a few auto electricians here in Adelaide, but the only
responses I managed to get out of them were either chuckles or
full on belly laughs (followed by "No, sorry, we can't get them,
and we don't know who can... what sort of car have you got again?").

To my mind 4 amps is quite a bit of current for a fuel pump to
draw, and by the feel of the fuel pump after driving around for
a while, most of the power so consumed is radiated via heat. 
Anyone need a 48 watt heater, that smells slightly of petrol?
There goes the memory again - I'm the one who needs one of those
otherwise my car won't run.
