The alternative is to remove the rheostat and return it. Then
connect the red wires to the red/white wires and the instrument
lights will then run at full dimmness all the time.
The hole can be covered with a badge, a compass (in matching
woodgrain as on mine), etc - use your imagination. It is a great
place for a flashing red LED; with or without an alarm. Some have
even enlarged the hole to install another 2 inch guage.
Alternatively, leave the dead rheostat and knob in place and just
change the wiring. Better for concours judging. Unless they judge
at night, they will never know that it not connected (since most of
the rheostats do not work, they would not know even if they did judge
at night).
