I have towed a fairly large boat (and other loads, like TR3s, on a boat
trailer) for long distances on passenger car tires, and can verify that it
was absolutely not "unbearable" to pull. I see no reason they shouldn't
track just as well on a trailer as on the rear wheels of a car (especially a
FWD like my Chevy).
However, if you are planning on buying radial car tires, check that the
trailer wheels are rated for radials. I know that, on my Dodge motorhome,
there have been cases reported of wheel failure that were blamed on using
radial tires on non-radial rims. Seems that, when used with radial tires,
the rims have to be de-rated, and they were marginal to begin with.
It would probably be best to go for a "highway rib" type tread design,
instead of an asymmetric or mud-n-snow tread, but I seriously doubt whether
you can tell the difference while towing.
Make sure the tire load rating (and inflation) is adequate, and that you
have 10-15% of the total towed weight on the tongue.
