engine now has about 160,000 miles, with one valve job, minor oil
consumption, but no thrust washer problem. What's going on here?

Time to measure end play.

Mostly it's preventative maintenance. If you renew the crank bearings and
thrust washers every 60 to 80 thousand miles you should get 200,000 to
250,000 miles on an engine without a major rebuild.

To measure endplay you need a run-out gauge. Set the runout gauge to
measure movement of the crank front to rear. using a big screwdriver push
the crank towards the rear of the car. Zero the gauge. Then depress the
clutch. The gauge will read the amount of axial play. If it is excessive
you run the risk of loosing the thrust washers into the oil sump. Check
the manual for allowable amounts of play.

Good luck (sounds like you already have with 160,000 miles)

Dave
