I you are into originality, drill holes and lap weld making simulated
spot welds (do remember to have enough current to get good penetration). 

If you want something that can withstand future corrosion, you should
definitely go for the butt weld.

Either way, you should definitely spend some time practicing on some
similar gauge scrap metal before starting to weld on the actual car.
