Hi Gerald
I have done this recently, the bearings do go on from the other side, i.e.
you do not need to split the taper! In fact there is a step on the shaft
which will stop the bearing coming off the way you are trying.
The bearing is a good interference fit on the shaft, and as there is no
sideways load on the shaft it is unlikely they will pull out.
Are you rebuilding completely (crown wheel and pinion) or just doing seals
and output bearings. I did the whole whack and even with the mesh pattern
correct there is still some whine, I was told it is caused by spooning of
the teeth and is not a big problem. Hope you have good success with whatever
you are doing to it.
I have included a scan of the shaft assembly, showing the step, I know this
will be stripped from the list copy!
The image is from a 2500 parts book but the axles are the same to the best
of my knowledge.

| List,
| Have any of you attempted to remove the flanges from the small stub axles
on
| either side of the IRS Differentials with any success? I am rebuilding an
| IRS and want to replace the bearings and seals on these axles. The
bearings
| must press off in this direction rather than towards the differential
| otherwise the axles themselves would just pull out of the differential.
