Uncle Jack,  If you check the port spacing (by holding a manifold gasket up
to each head) you will find that the exhaust port spacing is consistant
throughout the production.  The only difference between the early and late
exhaust is the single vs dual outlet.  The intake ports, on the other hand,
have been moved.  (Why? I don't know.  Maybe to make room for the EGR
port.)  

So, change head, change intake manifold and gasket.  You can't (or
shouldn't) mix and match these.
