Dear USER,

You have two choices:
1) Find out what it was last.  Disconnect the wires at the generator, start
the engine and measure the voltage at the large terminal on the generator. 
If it is positive your car is negative ground.  If it is negative the car
was positive ground.  

2) Change it to what you want.  Hook up a battery in the desired polarity,
momentarily run a jumper from the battery "hot" terminal to the smaller of
the the two generator terminals and off you go.

You may have to change your ammeter connections to make it read right.
