  It would be a fun project, but might be hard.

  The actual microphone used has to be tuned a bit
to listen for the knock but tune out the general
cacaphony of a running engine.

  Without access to a computer model or a giant lab
you might not be able to get it to trigger reliably
on knocks and not mistrigger on good-old-50s engine
technology drumming. ;>
