Noah,
Nitrous is a wonderful product with somewhat of a bad reputation that
isn't really deserved. To many people over the years have bought NO2
systems thinking they where getting cheap and easy horse power, they
would install it on a tired old pile of crap and wonder why they blew
the motor. To use NO2 your engine needs to be in good enough condition
to generate the extra horse power your creating the same as
supercharging or turbo charging. So if your TR four cylinder is properly
rebuilt balanced and blue printed and had the rods polished, shotpeened,
new rod bolts( ARP if possible ) you should be able to run a 50 hp NO2
kit without any great problems.
I know of one fellow who has a near concours late 50s Beetle with all
the goofy period accessories including the wide white walls, and a
carefully hidden NO2 system, everything is under the cooling tin on the
motor. This little Beetle will suprise many a LBC when it's on the
bottle and to my knowledge has no trouble running the system, but it was
all built for running NO2.
The nice thing about NO2 is you can have the daily derivability of a
stock engine and can still have the extra kick in the pants if you built
your engine and drive train to take it. The catch 22 is you have keep
filling that bottle and horse power is one of the most addictive things
in this world. One last thought most of these systems require 4.5-7 psi
fuel preasure and TRs run around 2 psi.
