Once upon a time during the ancient days of yore (before the web), a guy
named Dale who worked at Apollo computer and had a MGB decided to start
an internet e-mail group.
He set the software up on the server and watched rec.autos for people
asking questions about British cars to invite them to become part of this
e-mail group. During the summer of 1987 I received an e-mail asking if I
would like to join a new British car discussion e-mail group that was
just starting (I was on rec.auto asking TR3A questions).
I joined and we soon decided the group needed a name. After much
discussion the group name became Scions of Lucas or SOL. One of the
first acronyms we coined was LBC which stood for either Little British
Car or Large British Car depending upon which car was under discussion at
the moment. Our British cars become affectionately known as LBCs
Another term that caught on and stayed with us was "ship fitters disease"
which was first coined in the British car list to describe my TR3A
rebuild project.
The original analogy that defines ship fitters disease was:
One day a yacht owner went to change a burnt out light bulb. While he
was removing the light bulb he noticed that the socket was cracked and
decided to replace the socket while he was at it. When the old socket
came off he noticed that the wiring insulation was cracked and unsafe.
Since he already had the socket off this seemed the logical time to
replace the wiring. As he pealed the wiring off the ceiling beam he
noticed that the beam had dry rot.
So the yacht ended up in dry dock getting a major refitting because a
light bulb burnt out.
Anyway, the British car mail list was the original root parent from which
all the other British car lists originally split off. Each daughter list
took some of the original traditions and acronyms with them. THHe Triumph
mail list is a direct daughter of the original British car mail list
which is still going today, though with a lot less traffic since the
children lists moved away.
