Jeremy,
A fellow TR6'er and myself rebuilt my diff and replaced a bad u-joint on
one of the half shafts on my 74 TR6. I had the exact symptoms that you
describe, plus a bad oil leak in the diff. I hope to get it all
reinstalled in the next week.
Before I started with this repair, I jacked up the rear end and removed
the wheels. With a good flashlight, you can get a pretty good view of
the mounts, but to really do it right (hair line cracks in the mounts),
you need to drop the diff which is a PITA.

I believe I my have the dreaded clunk in the back of my 73 Six. I get a
clunking sound upon putting the car in 1st or reverse and releasing the
clutch. Considering the relatively new rear hubs, ujoints and rear end,
it
points me toward the rear end mounts.
My question is this, what is the best way to check for this problem. Do
I
have to remove the diff or at least lower it to find the problem, or is
there another way I have not thought of?
