I haven't tried the wash/wipe switch, but I have fastened a Triumph-style
knob to a plain shaft (actually a bicycle spoke) by drilling and tapping a
hexagonal electronics standoff, and inserting a setscrew through the
original knob side hole.  No modification to the knob, and the result has
worked just fine for many years on my TR3A.  Might be able to do something
similar here.
