Ian,
I battled this type of problem with my SIX a few years ago.  I had so much 
gas in the sump that it overflowed out the dipstick.  Changed fuel pumps with 
no 
success.  Turned out to be the needle valve in the front carb not seating and 
allowing gas to flow thru the motor as Dave has described.  Easy check for me 
was to fill the tank, pull the air cleaner and see if one or both of the 
carbs was wet with gas inside the throat.  They should be dry.  If wet you need 
to 
change the needle valve.  Easy task, just remove the carb and take the bottom 
off, replace that valve and your are fixed.  Stay away from Gross Jets, they 
are junk.
