Yeah, it's pretty easy to remove the driveshaft from below. But
you can also (I seem to recall) get at those front bolts from 
above, if your tranny tunnel has the original large hole meant
to provide access for lubing the U joint (filled with a large
rubber plug). The ABS/fibreglass covers usually don't have
this hole - you have to cut it yourself.

Dropping the diff is easy, and not a bad idea any way - you can
make sure that you've sealed the pinion before putting it back
on (stand it on its nose for 24 hours and see if any oild
has come out).
