Maybe a bit of both?  

 

The rear end on mine is much more planted since I replaced the worn shocks a
few years ago, but I still find how the rear end reacts to a pothole is
almost as accurate as the fuel gauge in telling me that gas tank is nearing
empty.  When the tank is near empty the rear of the car is much more
unsettled.
