That's usually a result of not letting them set up properly before assembling.
If you apply it to one surface, like the cover, and then wait at least 15
minutes before assembling, it will seal better and be less likely to form
strings inside.

But I've gotten to where I almost always use a gasket ... hand cut from gasket
stock or even cardboard if necessary ... and a gasket dressing like Hylomar or
Permatex.  I use Permatex only where I want to glue the gasket to something,
like rocker cover gaskets.  Seems like Hylomar seals better, but it won't always
hold the gasket in place.
