I'm not sure what the factory did but I learned the exhaust sealer trick from
an exhaust system specialist (muffler man) and have used it and it works a
treat when properly applied. You might try applying some to the exposed parts
of the joint trying to work it into the gaps but since this stuff cures to a
brittle, refractory type substance I don't think it will stand up to the
vibration for very long.
