The hex head bolts (which the British call setscrews) go into the engine block
or into a nut, the slotted head screws go into the front plate.  Shouldn't be
too hard to figure out which holes have threads in the plate ... you can tell
just by poking the slotted head screws into the hole and observing how much is
left sticking out before you turn them.  They aren't long enough to use in the
holes where the plate isn't threaded.

Of course if the threads in your front plate are damaged, you've got a problem.
