With the engine stopped, if you manually close the cutout contacts, and
don't open them again, they may stay closed and drain the battery through
the generator.  I'm not sure, the current may also be enough to overheat and
damage one of the armature windings after some time.

With the engine idling (and a healthy generator), all that happens is that
the generator starts working.  But it's best to check the ammeter
immediately afterwards; if it's showing a large discharge then there is
something wrong and you need to open the cutout contacts again.
