One way to finish a veneer dash which has served me very well over the years 
is to use a high quality yacht varnish. You need 6 or 7 coats, rubbing down 
between each coat with 280 wet and dry paper wet(don't know what you call 
that in US of A), moving to 360 as you approach the finish you would like. 
It only takes a few minutes for each rub down and next coat. Sometimes it 
helps to add a very little white spirit to the varnish. Make sure that any 
dust in the workshop has been laid before applying the final coat.
