I should have said an engineer at the Michelin Technical Center. A very long
and comprehensive discussion of safety aspects of old tires. After talking
with him for some time, I took my TR down to my tire guy and had the 8 year old
Michlins dismounted and carcasses interior inspected per his directions. I
decided they were safe for another year.
Clearly, YOS is their policy. I questioned him about the dom vs yos, and he
confirmed it. It may make no technical sense to us, but if you were trying to
sell tires and someone didn't want them because two of the six years were
already gone (like my Dunlops), you'd be very happy as a salesman that it was
yos instead of yom.
Old car people must drive warrantee makers nuts. I bought a Wards LIFETIME
battery for my TR3 in 1964. I had it replaced for free many many times until
its last battery in 1997 when Wards went out of business. Who would have
thought I'd keep the TR all those years.
Tires I think are a similiar problem-other than collectors, who drives tires
more than 6 years without wearing them out?
