Well, I have ... but only when the old oil was suffering from severe
viscosity breakdown.  

I drove a really badly worn TR3A engine for a year or two, and it would tear
up the viscosity improver in the oil in less than 1000 miles; turning 10W30
into about 0 weight oil.  The various mechanical noises from the badly worn
engine were much more obvious with oil as thin as water.

Still ran pretty good, BTW, although was noticeably lacking in torque below
3000 rpm or so.  Didn't even burn much oil, although I've no idea why not.
When I did finally pull it apart, the bearings were all into the copper
backing, and the ring gaps were around 3/16".
