But, Sears also carries models from other makers that do put out plenty of

Might also be worth mentioning that due to a relatively recent lawsuit, the
"hp" ratings on air compressors are changing considerably. Last time I took
a stroll through Sears, it was very obvious which compressors had been
re-rated as a result of the lawsuit, as they all drew about 1kVA per rated
"hp", instead of the 0.3 - 0.6 kVA per rated "hp" of the older units.
My rule of thumb is that if the motor name plate doesn't call for roughly
1kVA per rated "hp"; the maker is lying to you and should not be trusted.
Buying a "2 hp" compressor that runs from a 110v outlet is like buying a
perpetual motion machine, IMO.
Looking at the compressors lined up at Harbor Freight just the other day ...
they all pass the above test, now.
